Developmental Stages of Writing

As teachers, it is essential to understand and identify each stage of writing to develop effective strategies for teaching our students.

Stages of Writing Development

  • Pre-Literate- At this stage, children start to grasp the concept of writing. They become aware that writing serves a purpose and can convey meaning.

  • Emergent-At this stage, Children are still in the early phases of learning how to communicate using written symbols, and their writing may appear unstructured and highly experimental. The focus is on play and exploration, helping them gain a foundation for more formal writing skills in later stages.

  • Transitional-Some letter-sound correspondences and correctly spelled words begin to appear as the student moves into the transitional stage. However, they may be mixed with isolated letters and numerals.

  • Fluent- At this stage, writers clearly understand writing conventions and can produce more sophisticated, organized, and coherent pieces. The fluent writer can manage the mechanics of writing while focusing more on content, clarity, and expression.
